Windows Support

Evernote for Windows currently supports Windows XP and Vista.

Launch Evernote for Windows and sign in. An active Evernote account is required to use the software.

How to navigate and browse

Notes in Evernote for Windows are organized into a scrollable list called the “tape”. Notes are arranged chronologically by the date and time created, with most recent notes at the top, but you can change the order using the Sort by list in the bottom bar.

To view and navigate a notebook or all notebooks, select one from the Notebooks list in the Organizer panel on the left. You can change the view in the Note panel between notes only or notes plus a note list at the top, and scroll through the list with the scrollbars as indicated in the picture below.

To smoothly scroll the tape with variable speed, drag and hold the slider of the Accelerator Scrollbar located below the Main Scrollbar to control movement speed and direction.

You can also navigate using the Note List Scrollbar. Clicking on the List View button opens/closes a window with a list of note titles that can be navigated with cursor buttons; the tape moves accordingly to show the content corresponding to the highlighted note title.

The Organizer panel contains five sections: Notebooks, Tags, Attributes, Saved Searches, and Trash as discussed below.

Notebooks

This section contains a list of your notebooks and the number of notes in each one. The highlighted notebook contains the notes being displayed in the main Viewer Panel. The default notebook (the one into which new notes are automatically placed) has a dot next to it.

Right-click in this section to create, rename, delete, and set the default notebook.

Tags

The Tags section contains a list of tags and the number of notes each tag is assigned to.

Right-click in this section to create, rename, and delete tags.

To create a tag hierarchy, simply create a new tag, then click and drag it onto the tag which you want to be its parent. See for example the North Bay tag above; Marin and Sonoma are its children.

Attributes

This section contains Evernote's built-in recognition features, automatically classifying and enabling you to search for notes by attributes like creation date, date range, and the source where the note originated.

Saved Searches

This section contains a list of searches that you have performed and saved using the Save button after the search has been completed.

Right-click in this section to rename and delete Saved Searches.

Trash

This section contains any notes that you deleted using the Note Operations menu in Single Note view mode. If there is a number in the header, it indicates how many notes are in the Trash.

To view these notes in the Note panel, click on the Trash icon. If you then switch to Single Note view by clicking on a note, the Note Operations menu enables you to Delete Forever or Undelete Note.

Right-click in this section to permanently delete all notes in the trash.

Important note: any note in the trash is automatically deleted permanently after 30 days.

How to create a notebook

Notebooks are simply containers for your notes. You can create a new notebook and perform the other operations shown in the picture below by right-clicking on the Notebooks header in the Organizer panel.

Local notebooks reside only on your computer and never get synchronized to the Web server.

Synchronized notebooks get synchronized to the Web server, but are private and only accessible with your username and password.

Published notebooks get synchronized to the Web server, but are public and can be viewed, but not changed, by anyone who knows it's URL (Web address) and by search engines.

How to add notes and content

Web clipping

With Evernote running in the background while viewing Web pages, you can clip an entire page or just a selected area using the Evernote Clipper icon in the top menu bar as shown in the picture below.

You can clip content in two ways:

1. The 'Add to Evernote' button that is automatically installed in your Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Outlook applications when Evernote is installed. This will add a web page, highlighted portion of a web page, or an email message to a new note.

screenshot

To clip an entire web page or email, simply go to the page or email and click the Evernote button in the toolbar.

To clip a portion of a web page or email:

  • Select the content using the keyboard or mouse.
  • Click the Add to Evernote button.
  • A small notification window will appear on the lower right side of your screen to indicate that a clip was successfully added. You can click on this notification window to switch to Evernote and view your newly created note or to delete the note if you don't want to add the clip.

2. The Evernote Universal Clipper that can be launched and placed in your Windows Quick Launch Toolbar using the Evernote Tools > Launch Universal Clipper menu as shown below.

screenshot

To clip content from any document:

  • Highlight any portion of a document (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe PDF) that you want to clip.
  • Click the Evernote icon in your Quick Launch Toolbar.

Notes:

  • The clipped document may not preserve the original formatting due to variations in browsers and page design.
  • If the Evernote Universal Clipper cannot clip the contents of the document you need, an alert will be shown. Try adding the content as a screenshot as described under Adding Screenshots below.

To clip any portion of your screen as a screenshot:

  • Double-click the Universal Clipper icon in your Quick Launch Toolbar and this small control window will appear:
  • screenshot
  • Click the green selection button and a selection box will appear.
  • Drag and resize the selection box over the portion of the screen you want to capture.
  • If you also want to draw over the selection area, Press the D key and the mouse cursor will change to a pen.
  • Click the blue checkmark selection button.

Text notes

To create a blank note at the top of a notebook, highlight a notebook and click the New Note icon in the top bar, or press the Ctrl+N keyboard combination. An empty text edit window will open like the one shown below, allowing you to enter text or copy and paste text and graphics from the Clipboard.

To open an existing note for a closer look and editing, double-click it and a window like the following will open.

You can also create new notes by dragging files onto a notebook name or directly into a note. Currently supported file types include txt, html, jpeg, gif, wav and png.

You can email text and images into Evernote using the personal e-mail address associated with your Evernote account. Just log in using Evernote Web and click the Settings link at the top of the page to get your address.

Tags

Search terms

First select a notebook, or All Notebooks, from the Organizer panel. Any search that you perform will only display notes from the selected Notebook.

To find a particular note or a set of notes that contain ALL of your search terms, enter them into the search box. This will search the tags, text and handwriting in notes and images, and note titles, displaying note matches as you type while highlighting all occurrences of the term(s). Press F3 to scroll through the found keyword; each found term will be highlighted with a different color.

To display notes that contain ANY of your search terms, enter 'any:' into the search box followed by search terms as illustrated in the picture below.

Attributes

Attributes are automatic labels that Evernote assigns to notes when they are created to make it easier to group and find them later. Attributes include the date and time the note was created, when it was last modified, whether it contains images, audio, or digital ink, and its source such as email, web page clip, mobile device capture, or desktop application.

First select a notebook, or All Notebooks, from the Organizer panel or the drop-down list above the Notebooks list. Any attributes that you select will only display notes from the selected Notebook.

To display notes that contain a specific attribute, click on the arrow next to the Attributes header in the Organizer panel on the left, then click on an attribute to display any notes that meet the criteria.

How to synchronize notebooks

Synchronizing notebooks between your PC and the Evernote Web Service is a central feature of Evernote for Windows. You can sync manually by clicking the blue Sync button in the icon bar, or you can set up automatic sync in the Account > Properties... menu Synchronization tab as shown in the picture below.
