Following the extensive work we did on Evernote’s foundations in 2023, the team was able to hit the ground running at the beginning of the year. Thanks to an ambitious product roadmap and weekly release schedule, we managed to release twenty substantial improvements in the first three months of the year. But the work is far from done—we’re already exploring many exciting opportunities to make Evernote even better in the coming months. Below, I’ve included a list of our top improvements so far this year, along with a preview of what’s coming soon.

What's new at Evernote? 💚 March 2024

We doubled-down on improving the Editor to bring you a more powerful and fluid note editing experience. This involved adding several new Editor features, such as:

Slash commands. Easily add tasks, events, links, tables, headers, and much more to your note with a single keystroke (“/”).

Collapsible sections. This gives you more control over how you view your notes. Just click the toggle icon on the left of a heading or list item to collapse or expand the content below.

AI Edit. As an evolution of AI Note Cleanup, AI Edit can summarize, translate, edit, and generally improve the written content within your Evernote account. Learn more.

Image alignment. This fundamental option wasn’t previously possible in the Editor and was one of the first changes we introduced to ensure you have all the functionality you'd expect from your go-to note-taking software.

Arrow ligatures. Now, character sequences like "- >", "< - >", and "= >" are automatically formatted into nicely rendered arrows. It’s a small improvement that immediately makes notes look more professional and polished.


Calendar has always been a useful tool, but for a long time it was a paid feature buried within the product and limited by the fact that it only connected to Google Calendar. We focused on making it relevant and accessible to more people (while also setting the feature free for everyone to try!).

New Outlook Calendar integration. Sync your Outlook Calendar with Evernote to see your events and create event-specific notes with just one click. Learn more.

Quick Calendar access. The Calendar now has its own spot in the navigation bar. There are two display options: a full-screen mode for a detailed view and a pop-out window to quickly check your schedule.


We wanted to make the overall Evernote experience simpler and more intuitive while avoiding any changes that would disrupt the workflows you rely on. As a result, the UI and UX changes we did introduce were carefully chosen to make Evernote easier to use. Recent changes include:

A new user interface. We refreshed the entire Desktop and Web user experience with a clean and simple design intended to improve readability and put the focus on your notes. Learn more.

An intuitive ‘New’ button. It used to take two clicks to create a new note or task, which was one click too many! Now each action has its own button.

Note breadcrumbs. During customer research, many people requested a way to see the note title while scrolling in the note. We added the title to the in-note breadcrumb, which keeps it visible without taking up valuable Editor space.

In-app notifications. For now, in-app notifications are being used to share news about product changes and improvements. Down the line, we plan to include additional notifications for tasks, reminders, shared documents, and more!


In addition to all the new items we released, we also made fourteen powerful features available to everyone—see the full list here. But we didn’t stop there: We’re currently exploring how we can make even more advanced features, such as Tasks, Calendar, and Home, available to everyone.


Since the beginning of the year, we’ve solved nearly 100 bugs—here are a few that stood out:

We fixed an Android issue where offline notes weren’t showing in the offline note list.

We repaired broken keyboard shortcuts for non-US keyboards.

We made sure the “All results" button in the Filtered Notes widget was working as intended.

We also solved a problem with the "Fix conflicts" button in Scratchpad.


Most of the time, we can resolve problems with a simple bug fix and patch release. However, occasionally some issues turn out to be more complex and systemic, in which case the best option is to start from scratch. This is what happened with Evernote Search. Over the past months, we completely rebuilt the feature to reduce buggy behaviour and small idiosyncrasies.


We’re always looking for opportunities to introduce proactive changes to keep your account safe. Here are a couple of our recent security initiatives:

Legacy Evernote decommissioning. Evernote’s legacy apps presented a non-negligible security risk. Four years after the release of v10, we finally sunsetted all of Evernote's remaining legacy versions and eliminated the associated vulnerabilities. Learn more.

Compromised password reset. We took extra measures to protect accounts that were using passwords found in public data breaches, prompting a password reset in order to keep any personal data safe. Learn more.


We completely redesigned the Evernote Help & Learning center to make it easier to find useful information and create support tickets. I strongly encourage anyone experiencing problems to check it out—it’s an impressive repository of valuable information that can go a long way toward quickly resolving many of the most common issues.

We plan to introduce even more exciting features and improvements in the coming months. Here’s a sneak peek at what we’re already working on:

🏠 New mobile home. One of the most important reasons to use Evernote on your mobile device is to quickly capture information on the go. The new Evernote mobile home page will make the process of creating new items, like note and tasks, much faster. Tell us what you think about the design!

🗄️ New Files feature. Many people use Evernote as a filing cabinet to store important documents, scans, images—you name it! Up until now, these files could only be uploaded and viewed within a note. With the new Files feature, you’ll be able to see all your attachments in one place, with helpful links back to the relevant note. Get a sneak peek.

🗓️ New daily templates. We're working on new daily journal, planner, and checklist templates to help you start your day feeling more productive and organized. 

✅ More robust Tasks. Our plan is to bulk up Tasks with a full-screen view that includes multiple tabs, and two helpful new fields: description and priority. Share your feedback.

📅 More Calendar functionality. Before, we focused on making Calendar more accessible—next, we’re working on making it more useful. The first step is to introduce a native Evernote Calendar for anyone who wants to use the feature without connecting an external calendar. 

📥 Easier import into Evernote. We’re improving the import process so that you can add any markdown, .txt or .docx files into Evernote while preserving the original formatting.

🔄 RENT (metadata sync): RENT is a counterpart to last year's collaborative editing initiative. While collaborative editing focuses on instantly syncing note content across multiple devices, RENT handles note metadata syncing. With RENT, you'll see changes to note titles, thumbnails, dates, and note list content reflected across all your devices faster than ever before.

Twenty recent improvements in Evernote—plus a look at what’s next!

In summer 2023, we released Evernote’s first AI feature, AI Note Cleanup, which made it easy to polish your notes quickly and efficiently. Over the following months, the team aggregated a ton of insights based on customer feedback and was ready to reimagine the feature with powerful new capabilities. The result? AI Edit. 

Unlike its predecessor, AI Edit doesn’t just tidy notes, but also writes, summarizes, and translates. The feature is still in beta, but the early feedback shows us we’re heading in the right direction. We’re rolling it out now to all Desktop and Web users in version 10.81.


Here are the four ways you can use AI Edit to improve your notes and simplify your workflows:

Create summaries based on your audience. Generate summaries of varying length and formatting based on your needs—like bulleted lists, emails, or social media-ready captions.

Fix common mistakes. Correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

Get help with your writing. Make your storytelling shine with tailored introductions, conclusions, and titles.

Translate into 15 languages. Reliably communicate your thoughts in English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, or Korean.

Plus, we hope to introduce more helpful options soon, like Change tone to rephrase your writing and Improve structure to enhance note formatting.

It's easy! Start by selecting your base text (any formatting works)—from there, your AI-edited results are just a few clicks away:

Choose an action from the primary menu, which includes Summarize, Fix typos, Help me write, Translate, and Change tone (coming soon). 

Select the specific result you want from the secondary menu:

Summarize: Paragraph, Extended, Bullet, Micro (i.e. social), Email

Help me write:  Introduction, Conclusion, Title

Translate:  English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, Portugueses, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Korean

Your results will appear in the AI Edit dialogue box.

If you like what you see, you can insert the AI-generated text into your note by selecting Copy, and then pasting it where you wish. You can also choose to regenerate the result. 

Pro tip: Drag the dialogue box around the screen to better compare the results to your original text.

Please keep in mind that when you close the AI Edit window, the generated result written therein will be lost. If you wish to regenerate it, you’ll need to go through the process again.


AI Edit is an opt-in tool for anyone who is interested in adding generative AI to their workflows. If that’s not for you, you never have to use it!

If you do decide to try AI Edit, here’s some helpful information to keep in mind:

AI Edit uses a third-party API to generate results. This means that each time you use the feature, a subset of your data is processed externally. 

Only the text you select is processed by the third party. No other information within the note or account is used to generate the final result.

Your data is deleted by the third party within 30 days.

Your data isn’t used to train an Evernote or a third-party AI model. Neither the third party nor Evernote or our parent company Bending Spoons “learn” from your notes. Each new request is always treated as an independent event.

Improve your notes with AI Edit

The new Microsoft Outlook Calendar integration is available now on version 10.79 and higher.

This highly requested integration works directly with the Microsoft API to quickly sync your events in the Evernote calendar. Once synced, you can easily create and access event-specific notes.

Calendar-linked notes automatically include all the original event information. This information is searchable, so you can quickly find notes based on date, location, and meeting participants.

Plus, you can easily share all the content with other participants (even if they’re not using Evernote).

Ready to connect your Outlook Calendar? Follow these steps to get started.

The new Outlook integration is only the first step. We’re already working on additional ways to increase Calendar functionality and integrate it better with many of Evernote’s other helpful tools. Here’s a quick glimpse at what we’re exploring:

The ability to create events in Evernote Calendar and see them reflected in your external calendar. This would turn Evernote into a comprehensive, fully functional scheduling tool.

An option to add tasks and reminders to your Evernote Calendar for a unified daily overview. This approach would simplify your planning and centralize all of your to-dos in one place for better task management.

Access the Calendar from anywhere in Evernote

Until recently, the Evernote Calendar was only accessible using a widget on the homepage. Now, it’s taken the place it deserves in the left-hand sidebar on Desktop, so you can instantly access a full view of your calendar.

Evernote Calendar is available for Personal, Professional, and Teams customers. Personal customers can connect one external calendar to their Evernote account. Professional and Teams customers can connect up to five accounts.

Introducing the new Microsoft Outlook Calendar integration

[UPDATE] This blog post was updated on March 19 to reflect that the new decommissioning date for legacy versions of the Evernote app is now March 26, 2024.

The situation discussed in this post impacts only the 1% of Evernote users who are still running legacy software on macOS, Windows, and Android.

If you’re not sure whether you’re currently using a legacy version of the app, you can check in just a few seconds by following this short guide. If the version currently installed begins with the number 9 or below, it’s a legacy version and what follows applies to you.

On March 26, 2024, we’ll be saying goodbye to the Evernote’s legacy apps. On that date, all versions of Evernote released prior to v10 on macOS, Windows, and Android will stop working. The iOS version has already been decommissioned.

To continue using your Evernote account after March 26, 2024, you'll need to install the latest version of Evernote (v10).

We strongly encourage you to update well before the cutoff date. If you don’t update in time, your legacy app will stop working, and you won’t be able to log in again until you install v10 or use Evernote Web. To update to the latest version of Evernote, go to the relevant app store or evernote.com/download.


Why are legacy versions being decommissioned?

First and foremost, legacy versions of the app present a security risk to Evernote as a whole.

As they stopped being maintained when Evernote v10 was introduced in 2020, legacy apps are several years behind on crucial vulnerability fixes and the current best practices for data protection and abuse prevention. Furthermore, many legacy apps use older APIs that can be exploited for nefarious purposes—these are a liability for the entire product. Fortunately, we can eliminate this security vulnerability when all the legacy versions have been decommissioned. Therefore, to ensure Evernote is as safe and secure for everyone as possible, we must make sure that the small segment of the customer base still running a legacy version of Evernote updates to a recent version.

Secondly, decommissioning legacy versions of the app means we can remove the large parts of the backend code base that power them. This will make it far easier to introduce improvements, as we’ll no longer need to ensure backward compatibility with legacy versions. By unifying Evernote under v10, we can free up valuable resources for other tasks that have a direct, positive impact on the current version of Evernote—and, as such, on all Evernote users.

Evernote v10 has come a long way since it was launched in 2020. In the past year alone, we introduced a new note format and instant sync process, greatly increased reliability and security, and invested significantly in developing the product’s backend infrastructure.

Today, v10’s performance and functionality greatly outpace those of the legacy apps, and the progress is only accelerating. We’re releasing updates every week to deliver improvements faster than ever, and we recently introduced a beautiful new user interface—now available to all Desktop and Web users in version 10.73 and higher. 

Going forward, we have ambitious plans for new features and backend improvements that will make the Evernote experience smoother and more powerful than ever.

❗How to prepare for legacy decommissioning

As you prepare to update your legacy Evernote app to v10, please consider the following to ensure a seamless transition:

Check your notes are synced. Make sure that any notes you created or edited while offline have synced correctly.

Upsync your local notes. Evernote v10 does not support local notes. When you first open v10, you’ll be prompted to upload your local notebooks to the Cloud via the Convert local notebooks tool. However, we strongly encourage you to upsync your local notes before updating to the latest version.

Back up your notes. Consider backing up all your notes as ENEX files before updating. As a best practice, we recommend exporting notes on a per notebook basis: it’s faster than going note-by-note, yet ensures that you can easily re-upload any content back into Evernote without exceeding the monthly upload limits (which might happen if you used a bulk exporter plug-in to export one massive file).

Expect a slower experience the first time you open a note in v10. Legacy versions of Evernote use a different note format than v10. As such, each note must be converted to the new format. This action takes place when the note is opened for the first time in v10 and can last a couple of seconds. Going forward, it’ll load and update at lightning speed.

Don’t wait until the last minute. The update process should be quick and easy, but in the unlikely event that you do experience any difficulties, it’s important to make sure there’s time to address them. After March 26, there will be no way to access the legacy apps, so you’re strongly encouraged to avoid waiting till the last minute.

We’re excited to close this chapter in Evernote’s story so that we can focus all our attention on the future. For those who will be impacted, we greatly appreciate your cooperation and wholeheartedly believe you’ll come to love v10 as much as we do. 💚
