This guide will introduce you to the basics of using Evernote, including how to create, organize, sync, search and share notes.

The Home Screen

From the Home Screen you can create new notes and notebooks, as well as browse, organize, and search your Evernote account.

  1. Views: Views allows you to browse all notes, notebooks, tags, and recently viewed notes in your Evernote account. Swipe left or right to switch to a different view.
  2. Account Info: Tap to view information about your Evernote account, including your Evernote email address.
  3. Quick Notes: Tap to open a new blank note in the Note Editor, or to start a new note by snapping a photo, selecting a file to attach, or recording audio.
  4. Shortcuts: Shortcuts are the fast way to access the most frequently used content in your Evernote account, and can be created for notes, notebooks, Notebook Stacks and tags. Tap any Shortcut to open it. Notes will be opened in the Note Viewer, notebooks, tags and Notebook Stacks will display the Note List with all of the associated notes.

Create and Edit a Note

An Evernote note can capture just about anything, including text, images, files, audio, Web Clips and more. All notes are searchable, making them easy to find when you need them. Evernote even searches for typed and handwritten text inside attached images.

Creating a New Note

Once created, your note will automatically be saved to Evernote and synced across all your devices.

A Note

To create a new note, do the following:

  1. On the Home Screen, tap any of the Quick Notes buttons to create a new blank note, or to start by adding an attachment, snapping a photo, or recording audio.
  2. To enter text, tap into the text area of a note.
  3. To add one or more tags to the note, tap the Options iconoptions icon, then tap tag.
  4. To select a notebook to save the note in, tap the Options iconoptions icon, then tap notebook.
  5. Tap your device's back button to save the note and return to the Home Screen.

Editing a Note

Editing your notes is fast and easy with Evernote for Windows Phone.

A Note

To edit the contents of a note, do the following:

  1. Tap the note you want to edit to display its contents in the Note Editor
  2. Tap the Edit iconEdit icon at the bottom of the Note Editor.
  3. Tap anywhere in the body of the note to make edits.
  4. Tap your device's back button to save the note and return to the Home Screen.

Adding Checkboxes and Bulleted Lists

Evernote for Windows Phone allows you to add two special types of formatting to notes: bulleted lists and checkboxes. For additional text formatting options, any note you create in Evernote for Windows Phone can be opened and formatted in Evernote for a different platform (e.g. Evernote for Mac).

Bulleted List & Checkboxes

To add a bulleted list or checkbox, simply tap the corresponding icon at the bottom of the Note Editor.

Using Reminders

Reminders are a great way to keep track of notes that contain time-sensitive information, or that you need to accomplish upcoming tasks.

Setting a Reminder

To set a Reminder for a note, do the following:

  1. Set a Reminder for any note by opening the note and tapping the Reminder icon.
  2. To add a due date to the Reminder, tap Tap to set date next to the Reminder icon, then select a date and time and press the checkbox to confirm.
  3. To view the To-do list of Reminders, from the Note List press the Options iconoptions icon, then select show reminders.
  4. To reorder the Reminders in your To-do List, tap and hold, then select Move up or Move down.
  5. To mark a Reminder as completed, tap the checkbox beside the Reminder.

Editing and Removing a Reminder

To edit or remove a Note Reminder, do the following:

  • Tap the date and time to select a new time for your alert.
  • To remove the Reminder, open the note and tap the Reminder icon.

Using Email Reminders

You can opt to receive emails for your personal notebooks or Business Notebooks on the day timed reminders are due. Email alerts are not available for joined notebooks. Alarm emails for personal notebooks are sent to your personal email address and those for Business Notebooks are sent to your business email address. To enable or disable email reminders do the following:

  1. From the Home Screen, tap the options icon
  2. Select Settings
  3. Swipe to show the general settings
  4. Use the toggle to turn on or off Reminders daily email digest

Evernote Business users may opt-in or out of Reminder emails for individual Business Notebooks. To enable or disable, open the Business Notebook and select reminder notifications from the menu.

Deleting a Note

To delete a note, do the following:

  1. Tap and hold on the note you want to delete. An options menu will be displayed.
  2. Tap delete. The note will be moved to your Trash Notebook.

Sync Your Evernote Account

Sync ensures that everything in your Evernote account is always available to view, edit and search everywhere you have Evernote, including smartphones, tablets, computers and on the web.

Automatic Sync

Your Evernote account is automatically synced across all of your devices whenever you make a change to your Evernote account, including creating, editing or deleting a note, creating or editing a notebook, and creating or editing a tag.

Manual Sync

You can sync your Evernote account manually at any time by tapping the Sync iconSync icon at the bottom of the Home Screen, Notebook View, or Recent View.

Browse Your Notes

You may browse notes easily by note, notebook, or tag by swiping left or right on the Home Screen to switch to the different views.

All Notes

To browse all the notes in your Evernote account, tap View All Notes on the Home Screen

Note List

To browse your notes, swipe vertically to scroll through the Note List.

Notebooks

To browse all the notebooks in your Evernote account, swipe to the Notebooks View. The Notebook List will be displayed. To view all the notes in a notebook, tap it.

Notebook List

Personal notebooks will display the notebook name and the number of notes it contains

Shared Notebooks will looks similar to your private notebooks, but also display the Shared Notebooks iconShared Notebook icon and the Shared Notebook owner's Evernote username. If you are the owner of a Shared Notebook, only the Shared Notebook icon will be displayed

Business Notebooks will display the Evernote Business icon Evernote Business briefcase icon.

Notebook Stacks will display the Notebook Stack iconNotebook Stack icon, and the number of notebooks contained in the Notebook Stack.

Tags

To browse all the tags in your Evernote account, swipe to the Tags view. The Tags List will be displayed.

To view all the notes associated with a tag, tap it.

Shortcuts

Shortcuts are the fast way to access your most frequently used content in your Evernote account. You may create a shortcut to any note, notebook, Notebook Stack, or tag, then access it from the Shortcuts List on the Home Screen with a single tap.

Organize Your Notes

Evernote gives you many ways to keep your notes organized, so that you can browse, search and remember in the way that works best for you.

Notebooks

Notebooks are the most common way of organizing notes in Evernote, and are commonly used to separate notes by category, location or purpose. For example, you might create one notebook called 'Work Notes' and one called 'Personal Notes' to keep these types of notes separate and easier to find.

All Evernote accounts have one default notebook that is automatically created when the account is created.

Shared Notebooks can also be used to selectively allow others to see and edit the contents of your notebooks.

Adding Notes to a Notebook
By default, all new notes will be saved to your Evernote account's default notebook. To learn more about creating notes in a specific notebook, go to Create & Edit a Note.

To add notes to a notebook, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the note you want to move, then tap to open it.
  2. Tap the Edit iconEdit icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Options iconoptions icon. A menu will be displayed.
  4. Tap notebook. A list of all the notebooks in your Evernote account will be displayed.
  5. Tap the notebook you want to move the note to. Evernote will automatically save and sync the change.

Tags

Tags are an optional way to associate keywords to notes and improve searchability. One or more tags can be added when a note is created or at a later time. Common uses for tags include associating notes with categories, memories or locations.

Tagging a Note
To add a tag to a note, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the note you want to tag, then tap to open it.
  2. Tap the Edit iconEdit icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Options iconoptions icon. A menu will be displayed.
  4. Tap tag. A list of all the tags in your Evernote account will be displayed.
  5. Tap the tags you want to add to the note.
  6. Tap your device's back button to return to the Note Editor. Evernote will automatically save and sync the change.

Creating a New Tag
To create a new tag, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the note you want to tag, then tap to open it.
  2. Tap the Edit iconEdit icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Options iconoptions icon. A menu will be displayed.
  4. Tap tag. A list of all the tags in your Evernote account will be displayed.
  5. In the 'New' field, type the name of the new tag you want to add.
  6. Tap the + icon. The tag will be created and applied to the note.
  7. Tap your device's back button to return to the Note Editor. Evernote will automatically save and sync the change.

  1. Open the Note List. This can be done by tapping View All Notes on the Home Screen, tapping any notebook, tapping any tag, or performing a search.
  2. Tap and hold on the note you want to create a shortcut to. An options menu will be displayed.
  3. Tap add to shortcuts. The note will be added to the Shortcuts List.

Creating a Notebook Shortcut

To create a shortcut to any notebook, do the following:

  1. Swipe to open the Notebooks view. The Notebook List will be displayed.
  2. Tap and hold on the notebook you want to create a shortcut to. An options menu will be displayed.
  3. Tap add to shortcuts. The notebook will be added to the Shortcuts List.

Creating a Tag Shortcut

To create a shortcut to any tag, do the following:

  1. Swipe to open the Tags view. The Tags List will be displayed.
  2. Tap and hold on the tag you want to create a shortcut to. An options menu will be displayed.
  3. Tap add to shortcuts. The tag will be added to the Shortcuts List.

Creating a Notebook Stack Shortcut

To create a shortcut to any Notebook Stack, do the following:

  1. Swipe to open the Notebooks view. The Notebook List will be displayed.
  2. Tap and hold on the Notebook Stack you want to create a shortcut to. An options menu will be displayed.
  3. Tap add to shortcuts. The Notebook Stack will be added to the Shortcuts List.

Removing a Shortcut

To remove any shortcut from the Shortcuts List, do the following:

  1. Swipe to open the Home Screen.
  2. In the Shortcuts List, tap and hold on the shortcut you want to remove.
  3. Tap remove from shortcuts.

Search Your Notes

Everything in Evernote is searchable, including the contents of notes, tags and attachments. Evernote even searches for typed and handwritten text inside attached images.

Search field

To search your Evernote account, do the following:

  1. Tap the Search iconSearch icon at the bottom of any view.
  2. Tap the search field and enter keywords, tags, locations and more. You can search for just about any information contained in your notes.
  3. Tap the return key on your device's keyboard. Your search results will be displayed in the Note List.

Document & PDF Search (Evernote Premium Feature)

Evernote Premium and Evernote Business subscribers may also search for typed and handwritten text inside the following attached file types:

  • Scanned PDFs
  • Documents (Microsoft Office and iWork)
  • Spreadsheets (Microsoft Office and iWork)
  • Presentations (Microsoft Office and iWork)

Share Your Notes

Evernote is more than a tool for remembering everything, it's also great for sharing the information and memories you capture with others, as well as collaborating.

Share Notes

To share a note, do the following:

  1. Open the note you want to share.
  2. Choose from the following sharing options:
    • Email: Tap the Email iconemail icon at the bottom of the screen, then compose the email as you normally would.
    • Social Networks: Tap the Options iconoptions icon at the bottom of the screen, tap share social, then select the social network you want to share the note with.
    • Public URL: Tap the Options iconoptions icon at the bottom of the screen, then tap copy link. A publicly accessible url will be saved to your device's clipboard. Please be aware that anyone with the Public URL will be able to view the note.

Shared Notebooks

Shared Notebooks let you share your notebooks and the notes they contain with anyone, whether they are an Evernote user or not.

With Evernote for Windows Phone you can view your Shared Notebooks, as well as Joined Notebooks that other Evernote users have shared with you. These notebooks will display the Shared Notebook iconShared Notebook icon in the Notebook List. Joined Notebooks will also display the Evernote username of the Shared Notebook's owner.

To turn a notebook into a Shared Notebook, do the following:

  1. Swipe to open the Notebook view. The Notebook List will be displayed.
  2. Tap and hold on the notebook you want to share. An options menu will be displayed.
  3. Tap share settings. The sharing menu will be displayed.
  4. To share with an individual, tap the + icon at the bottom of the page, then specify the email address of the individuals you want to share the notebook with.
    • If you are sharing a notebook from your personal Evernote account, or are sharing an Evernote Business notebook to someone outside the business, invitees will receive an invitation to join. They will have the option to View Notebook (only look at contents in a web browser) or Join Notebook (add the Shared Notebook to their Evernote account). If you are an Evernote Business user and are sharing a Business Notebook, invitees who are in your Evernote Business will receive a notification email and the notebook will appear in their Evernote account after their next sync.
  5. To share the notebook via a publicly accessible URL, swipe to open the 'people' menu, then tap the public slider to turn public sharing on. The Public URL for the Shared Notebook will be displayed. You may also tap the Social iconsocial icon at the bottom of the screen to select a social network to share the Public URL with.
