6 months, 110 improvements: See top Evernote changes in 2025

Back in 2024, we set an ambitious goal to release 100 improvements over the course of a year—and we did. 🎉

But we were just warming up. In fact, we’ve already introduced more improvements (110!) in just the past six months alone.

These include everything from little tweaks that makes everyday note-taking smoother to powerful new features that change how you work. Notably, we worked extensively on improving core workflows, Search, collaboration, customization, AI tools, and over-all app performance.

You can find the complete list of all 110 improvements here—we dive into the highlights below. 👇

✍️ Editor and core workflows

At its core, Evernote is a note editor. That's why, no matter how much we expand the product's functionality, we always come back to the basics: making sure that writing, organizing, and retrieving your notes is smoother than ever.

Here’s what’s new in Evernote’s Editor and other core functionalities:

Evernote new Templates experience

A new Templates experience. Released January 2025. Earlier this year, we completely redesigned the Templates experience to make it easier to jump directly into note-taking without the need to worry about creating (or recreating) the perfect formatting each time. Now, you can:

  • Create custom templates from any note.
  • Access your templates directly from the all-new Templates section or apply a template directly to a new note by selecting one from your My templates list.
  • Make use of the refreshed Templates gallery, which offers dozens of ready-made templates that you can add to your Evernote account with just one click.

Improved markdown support for consistent formatting. Released February, 2025. Now, when you copy and paste content from external sources (like ChatGPT 😉), the text will keep its original formatting, including bolded and italicized text as well as headers, lists, links, and block quotes.

Improved slash commands. Released February 2025. One year after we first released / commands, we're constantly looking for new ways to make them more versatile and useful. Most recently, you can:

  • Activate the / command menu inside of headers and tables
  • Fix a typo in your command without needing to re-trigger the menu
  • Type with confidence, knowing that adding "/" between letters will no longer trigger the menu by mistake

A fresh look for PDF and image editing. Released March 2025. We rewrote the software we use for in-app PDF and image editing on Desktop and Web, eliminating some long-standing bugs and freshening up the design for a smoother overall experience.

Evernote custom default fonts

Custom default fonts. Released May 2025. With this update, you can set your preferred font style, size, and color once and have it applied to every subsequent new note. Easily control the defaults for header and body text via the Aa menu, or by going into your settings.

A better workflow for moving and deleting notes. Released June 2025. We made some small but important changes to how the Move and Delete note actions work to reduce friction during these key operations. Now:

  • When you move or delete a note, the next one opens automatically
  • You can navigate directly to the new note location via a link in the confirmation banner
  • You can use the Undo option to quickly reverse any action
  • You’ll get more from the Move modal itself, including seeing the name of the note being moved and the option to create a new notebook or space directly from the modal

Evernote new Search experience

🔍 Search

Creating great notes can only get you so far—it’s equally important that you can retrieve important information quickly and seamlessly. That’s why we recently introduced several improvements to the search experience in Evernote with the intention of helping you find the right content in fewer taps.

A better search modal

  • Centered pop-up. Our first change was to bring the activated search modal from a narrow column on the lefthand side to a centered pop-up window. This way, we give more space and visibility to your search results.
  • Clearer sections in the default state. Better default states in the search pop-up make it more useful before you even start typing your query. Quickly scan top categories at a glance: Recent searches, Saved searches, Recent notes (grouped by when they were last updated), and Filters
  • Scrollable results. Unlike before, you can now see all of your query results via a scrollable list directly in the modal.
  • New keyboard shortcuts. Open notes faster with dedicated shortcuts:
→ Press CMD+L or CTRL+L to copy a note link directly from the search modal.
→ Press CMD+Enter or CTRL+Enter to open a note in a new window.
  • A more convenient default scope. When searching inside a notebook or space, the default scope is now set to Everywhere to get you the best results. If needed, you can still manually switch the search to focus on just a specific notebook or space.

Sharper suggestion logic

  • Smarter and faster suggestions while typing. As you type in the search modal, suggestions appear faster than ever—not just notes, but also notebooks, stacks, spaces, and tags.
  • Priority for title matches. We give higher priority to note, notebook, stack, space, and tag suggestions with titles that match your search query. Need more? Simply scroll to see additional notes with matching content. Still looking? Press Enter to run a full search and manage results directly from the note list.

Improved search results

  • Unlimited results. We’ve removed the cap that previously limited search results to 128. Now, your search returns all relevant results each time.
  • Targeted in-note results. When opening a note from your search results, you’ll now land directly on the first matching term, highlighted so you can locate it more easily.
  • More reliable Search and Find in note results. We’ve enhanced consistency and precision across search and in-note highlighting, so you can locate what you need with confidence

Released June 2025.

🤝 Collaboration

Over the past six months, we’ve invested heavily in making Evernote a more collaborative workspace for individuals and teams alike with new features and small tweaks designed to make collaborating in Evernote more powerful, intuitive, and secure.

Shareable workspaces. Released February 2025. In late 2024, we made Spaces (formerly a Teams-only feature) available for everyone. This powerful layer for organization and collaboration tool was initially released in beta, and over time we’ve added more functionality. One of our first changes was to make it possible to share your personal spaces with other individual Evernote users. Just click “Share,” add the person, set their permissions, and go!

Improved sharing UX. Released February 2025.

  • Redesigned sharing modal. We’ve revamped the sharing modal to make it simpler and clearer to manage access permissions.
  • Unlimited simultaneous viewers on public notes. Anyone with the link can view it without restrictions—perfect for publishing content for a large audience.
  • Lite sharing flow. When a note link is opened outside the app, it will now consistently open in the Lite Note Editor, making it easily accessible for non-logged in users (note permissions permitting). Users then have the option to open the note in the full app and save public notes directly to their account.
• Improved social sharing options. We’ve added social sharing buttons to the Lite Note Editor, making it easy to copy the link, email it, or share it via WhatsApp, Facebook, or X.

Evernote in-line comments

In-line comments. Released March 2025. Use in-line comments to flag specific words, phrases, or entire sections of your text to your collaborators. This way, you can leave feedback, ask questions, raise issues, or highlight ideas without ever leaving Evernote. The note owner receives email notifications for each new comment; instead new replies to existing comments trigger a notification to the note owner and anyone else in the thread. But don’t worry, you won’t return to a spammed inbox: we rate limit emails to once per hour per note, or up to three per hour for all notes.

Note access requests. Released May 2025. If you receive a note link but don’t have permission to view the content, you can now ask the note owner for access directly via Evernote. You’ll be alerted as soon as access is granted—from there, you can jump back in via the original link or find the content in the 'Shared with me' section.

🤖 AI tools

Evernote’s AI tools are focused on saving you time and simplifying your work. Here’s how we’ve expanded Evernote’s AI capabilities in the past six months:

Higher limits for AI Transcribe & AI Edit. Released April-May 2025. You can now use AI Transcribe for audio, video, and image files that are up to 1 hour in length or 100MB in size—ideal for converting long meetings, lectures, podcasts, or really high-def images into editable and searchable text. Plus, we doubled the character limit for AI Edit, so you can now apply improvements to longer notes.

Two new AI (re)writing tools to improve your content:

  • (In-app) Use the new AI Edit “Write As” function to turn your text into an email or social media post. Released February 2025.
  • (Web tool) Leverage AI Rewrite to reword your text—you can even choose to “humanize” the content for a more authentic result. Released March 2025.

Two new AI transcription web tools to simplify how you turn audio into text, and vice versa:

  • With Evernote Text-to-Voice, you can turn your text into natural, easy-to-listen-to audio, choosing from a variety of voices and even setting the right tone. Released June 2025.

Evernote AI Meeting note taker

  • With Evernote Meeting Note-taker, you can easily capture audio and video from your computer’s microphone or browser tab. From there, we automatically generate a transcript, complete with speaker recognition. Released June 2025.

🎨 Customization

Evernote should feel like your workspace, not someone else’s. That’s why, in addition to default fonts and template customization, we’ve rolled out several other new ways to customize your account exactly the way you like it.

  • You can now set a custom thumbnail for any note—just right-click on an image or PDF and choose “Set as note thumbnail.”
  • Evernote remembers your custom sidebar and navbar preferences across your devices for a consistent experience on Desktop, Mobile, and Web.
  • Now you can fully personalize your daily notes: Edit the default templates, choose where your notes get saved, or even make your own custom daily note from scratch.
  • You can now re-access the Mobile Widgets page from the More menu in the navbar.
  • Not a fan of / or @ menu shortcuts? No problem—you can now disable them in Settings. For adding links and formatting manually, just use the Insert menu and the Editing toolbar instead.

Released January-March 2025.

⚡️ Speed & performance

We’ve been busy behind the scenes to make your Evernote experience faster than ever before. Here are just some ways Evernote’s performance has improved over the past six months:

[Desktop & Mobile] Attachments and tags sync. We rebuilt the engine that handles how attachment and tags sync in Evernote, drastically increasing the speed with which they sync in a variety of circumstances:

  • Up to 2x faster attachment sync for shared notes, plus fewer broken previews in the editor
  • Up to 10x faster attachment sync in large accounts with big notebooks
  • Up to 300x faster tags sync in large accounts with tags used within many notes

[Mobile] Note loading and opening. We’ve reduced wait times when opening or creating a note on mobile:

  • On iOS, 96.5% of users load the editor in under 1 second (up from 76%), while on Android 97% of users load the editor in under 2 seconds (up from 69%).
  • We also made the process of opening and creating notes in Android faster for a much larger portion of the user base (+23% and +15% respectively!).

[Desktop] Notebook list loading time. Your notebook list now loads up to 2x faster and uses 50% fewer CPUs.

Released February-April 2025.
